My Testimony of the Prophet
by Donna Chapin
I know that we have a prophet on Earth today. I have a personal testimony of that fact. One month after being baptized,
in October of 2002, I attended conference. President Hinckley spoke that day, and it changed me. That conference changed the
way I viewed the atonement, church, and the prophet. Growing up in a very anti-LDS family made it difficult for me as a new
member to completely embrace the church. I had stirrings in my spirit to be baptized, that the church was true, but did not
have a personal testimony of it until I saw President Hinckley speak that day. When he spoke, I felt the Spirit wash over
me. And to feel the Spirit when he spoke must mean that the church was true. And if it was true, it meant that all the prophets
before him must have been called of God. Hearing him gave me a passion for the church that I never thought I would receive.
Because I felt the Spirit, I knew his words must be true and from Heavenly Father himself. That meant that I must heed and
obey them. They were straight from the Lord. My favorite scripture has always been Jeremiah 29:11. "For I know the plans
I have for you, " says the Lord. "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future."
And he is giving me guidance and hope through the counsel of his prophets today.
